This painting dates from the artist’s Danish period. In 1674 Hulst went to Rome, where he joined the ‘Bentveughels’. In 1691 King Christian V of Denmark called him to Copenhagen as a court painter. The present painting constitutes an important rediscovery that is to improve our understanding of the work method employed by this interesting artist, about whom little is known today.
